The Performance/VDO installation Inhale-Exhale draws its inspiration from meditation, a pure mental exercise borrowed from traditional Buddhist culture, to develop and go deeply into one’s mind. In the present socio-economic context, this discipline is a way for me to reach the necessary clarity of mind and wisdom required to exercise freewill of thoughts and actions.
My work is inspired by my childhood memory, which is still very clear. It testifies the serenity, feeling of freedom, tranquillity and wellbeing of a time when harmony still existed between men and nature; a time I could feel myself “protected” by Buddhist culture. My problems surfaced with unsatisfied needs created by new needs: material needs, needs of others and later the need to follow or fight against the coercive trends of the art scene and hence finding myself in between socio-economic and artistic realities.
Through Buddhist meditation I am trying to grasp the serenity of my childhood again, aiming at understanding the essence of the Buddhist doctrine and its application. The results of my search in the Buddhist path do not require any comment, but confirm the effectiveness of meditation and its beneficial power on my mind. The title Inhale-Exhale alludes to a meditation technique, a necessary breather in the round of life in which I try to observe, study and understand, to accept my environ-met and myself. I know many people throughout the world join me in this search.
(The Performance stages the artist, volunteers and the audience sitting
in meditation posture on a chessboard in the middle of a room. Around them
VDO sequences shot during the performance are projected on two parallel
screens edging the chessboard (or on two walls depending on the size of
the room.) On the other screens (or walls) slow-motion VDO sequences are
projected showing the artist meditating in several urban and rural spots.
The whole work is sound-tracked by sounds of deep, slow breathings alluding
to the peaceful strength of the ocean. Colours are black and white (costumes,
VDO, chess-board).
