This artwork demonstrates, what happens, when the Thai Buddhist wisdom
“To know, when you have enough”, is disregarded by both the individual and
society.
Buddha statues are a main characteristic of the cultural
landscape of Thailand, where the vast majority practises Buddhism. The Buddha
statue symbolises a religion that represents equality, harmony, peace of
the individual and within society in conjunction with a balanced and righteous
measure of all things - combined these are very positive values. Does it
contrast with how Thai society presents itself in reality? If you look closely
at the different parts of the Buddha statue, you will recognise, how the
artist views its present state. As a hint, remember that the Asian crisis
in 1997/98 was triggered by a world wide speculation against the Thai currency,
the Baht, which was undertaken on a massive scale. Nevertheless, the ultimate
reason for the success of this global speculation lies in the fact, that,
despite the clear signs of crises, instead of taking the required corrective
measures, the urge to make quick profits in financial transactions prevailed.
This reaction is linked to the inner state of, and processes within, society.
This the artist has managed to ingeniously express in this artwork.
