There is more to Cambodia then what is to be seen through the tunnelled view of the foreign temple visitor.
Cambodia is known for its vast areas of ancient temple
sites in the Siam Reap area. To a lesser extent also for the tragedy of
Khmer Rouge rule. The former has in the meantime made it an internationally
acclaimed tourist destination, the latter the subject of research of a handful
of historians.
My picture is framed by the mouth of a huge water tunnel made up of many
colours representing all the people, nations and religious communities of
the world that visit our temple sites. The water tunnel also conjures up
the image of farming, still the livelihood of the majority of the Cambodians.
I have set the famous Bayon temple with its four-sided faces in the middle
of my picture or at the end of the tunnel. The temple has seen centuries
of war, yet still it stands firm.
But there is more to Cambodia then what is to be seen through the tunnelled
view of the foreign temple visitor.
