Unhealthy food bought in globalised food outlets is consumed everyday becoming
a prolific but silent killer, thus turning retail outlets into collective tombs.
In this surreal painting I try to convey my message on a serious issue that concerns me in a rather humorous way. As an artist, a cartoonist and an illustrator by profession, I like it this methodology. The idea derived from a Bruneiese proverb: ‘Too much sugar will kill a group of ants’. It translates as a warning that too much of (any) thing makes us lazy, dumb and un-creative and resulting in a stillstand both on the individual as on the societal level. Brunei, known as a rather rich country provides its people with a comfort-able life. And yet, in some areas Brunei still lacks behind and could do better.
There is another interpretation for this painting from my perspective, based on real life experience in Brunei. Unhealthy food bought in globalised food outlets is consumed everyday becoming a prolific but silent killer turning retail outlets into collective tombs. This is a direct impact of globalisation on our society.
